Baby Steps onto the River

My next trip of the Summer was to Colorado. Luckily I live just a few hours from the border so I was able to do this trip without booking a flight. However, if this is something you are interested in doing, check out this great deal from Park Sleep Fly, get 15% off airport parking with the code INDEPENDENCE15 through July 31st.

Saturday we were up early to go Whitewater Rafting in Glenwood Springs. We had a full day of Whitewater Rafting planned. We did whitewater rafting for the first three hours on the river with guides. It was a really good adventure. However, I understand not everyone is quite as adventurous as I am. There are many options they have for shorter trips and trips that are down the slower part of the river for those who maybe aren’t as excited about rafting higher class rapids.

In the afternoon, after lunch, we had the chance to get in Kayaks and finish the afternoon on the “lazy” part of the river, which we later discovered was at the highest its been in years, so was little more rapids than lazy this time around.

The three of us went hiking later in the afternoon and discovered a girl in distress. We were able to locate her and help get her off the mountain and back to safety, which ended up taking all of our time between rafting and dinner.

For dinner we went to a couple’s house that works with me and we were fed an absolutely delicious bar-b-que dinner. We were told of an alternate route back to the campground and took it through the backroads of Colorado, and boy was it gorgeous.

I felt like I could just curl up on the ground with the cows and stay there for days. I felt such a peace driving through the country. Of course, this adventure was a little more adventurous than some, but I still believe its do-able for anyone, even if you have chronic conditions that you think may hold you back. You can of course wear long sleeves on the river if you struggle being in the sun, and guides will usually be happy to work with you to ensure you are comfortable with the kayaks or rafting. They do a wonderful job of keeping everyone safe. And if you just can’t wrap your mind around whitewater rafting, there are so many beautiful hiking trails all around the area that you can enjoy. Such as the trail we did on Sunday at Rifle Falls state park.

This hike, pictured below, was actually very do-able for all levels. The entire hike is technically wheelchair accessible.
