Do what You Love

Something. I’m definitely recognizing is that, no matter how many times you try to convince yourself, you are doing something for you. Your health, your stress relief… etc, it often doesn’t ring true unless you can find a way to enjoy whatever particular activity you are speaking of.

I find myself pulled more and more towards the things in life that bring me true, pure joy.

  • Taking a walk. (any weather)
  • Eating a chocolate cake donut
  • Spending time with my family
  • Reading or listening to books
  • Being outdoors
  • Watching TV after a long stressful day
  • Eating a Chic-Fil-a Spicy Sandwhich with extra pickles
  • Talking to friends on the phone
  • Taking an absurdly long bubble bath
  • Naps

One thing I hope you’ve noticed about this list is that it’s not all things that are perfectly healthy for me. It’s not all things that are going to make me feel wonderful in the long run. But I think that’s kind of the point. Enjoying something is a very personal endeavor. Notice I didn’t include any even though I shouldn’t clauses.

If you find joy in something, I truly believe it’s okay to enjoy it regardless of the opinions of others. We are all so consumed with obtaining likes, and thumbs up, and hearts stars and horseshoes; we are forgetting to do what truly makes us happiest.

If you are happiest writing a novel, write. If you love making art, make it. The beautiful thing about doing what we love is that when we are doing that, people can see and feel that passion, and it comes through in the work.

Don’t get me wrong, life must still go on, we still need incomes, we still have to provide for ourselves… but maybe by leaning into the things that bring you joy, you can open pathways, broaden horizons, and create a life brimming with joy.
