Does your chronic condition cause you pain or keep you from spending your days outside in the sun? Do you at times feel you are drowning in constant bills, hospital or doctor visits?
If this is you, I can imagine its hard to see people on social media having these grand and great adventures around the world. From people swimming in waterfalls in Bali, to friends standing in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris it can be easy to feel left out, and as though you are missing part of your life.
I have a few tips for anyone suffering from FOMO (fear of missing out):
- Social Media is the equivalent of highlight reels. YES, it may seem that everyone spends endless days in search of adventure, but in reality these are moments that will pass and they too will return to their “normal” i.e. boring lives.
- Think of one thing in your life that brings you immense joy. Is it your children or pets having the time of their lives? Is it reading a book cover to cover? Is it creating a painting, taking a walk or sitting in the woods listening to the birds sing? Do you take and post photos or videos of all these experiences – probably not… but just because you aren’t posting these magical experiences doesn’t mean you aren’t experiencing your own small adventures and feeling the magic in everyday living.
Many of us living with these conditions feel like it’s a miracle we’re still alive. That is nothing to be ashamed of. You are defying the odds.
Think of one thing you can do, and while it may be a small adventure to others, make it a big deal to yourself. Whether it’s going on a night swim in a lake that has always been your happy place, or taking a road trip to see the fall colors and make a “leaf angel”, or trying every yogurt shop or small town eatery in your hometown, don’t let the fear of disappointing or not living up to other people’s experiences make you give up on your own big deal dreams. No more waiting for the right time. Take the hot air balloon ride, take a train across the country. Live now.
Take inventory of your small adventures. Journal every detail, every happy moment, every time you feel peace, every sweet experience no matter the size. You will begin to see magic in your ordinary every-day life.
