Some “Light” Reading

Guys T, I finished reading “A Hobbit, A Wardrobe, and A Great War” this morning. This is a book I’ll probably recommend for months. I didn’t expect a deepish dive into the author’s backgrounds. I had no idea that C.S. Lewis had all but given up on God at the beginning of the Great War. Both He and Tolkien were anti-technology and believed as technology continued to progress at the pace it was going, men would forget their God and think more highly of themselves. It’s interesting how this has transpired. Tolkien helped Lewis renew his faith in Christianity and become one of the most iconic Christian writers of all time and their friendship blossomed. Its interesting to think that if their friendship hadn’t continued after the war, and they had not been intertwined in their work and stories, the world may never have gotten Tolkien’s masterpiece, The Lord of The Ring series. From what I understood of this while listening is that, these books are an estimation of the progression of the world at war and the downfall of humans in a quest for power. He concludes that the ultimate power will never be restored until “The King” returns in His glory.

Whatever you may think of Christianity, this book is a wonderful dig into two iconic men who helped shaped the literature of the early 20th century that is so revered by thousands.

Despite the harshness of their reality, both C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were able to metaphorically dig themselves and many others out of the darkness with their books that reflect the light they were able to find in their lives. I highly recommend the book to anyone regardless of your beliefs.

The author also told a story at the end that he learned about his own ancestors who were Italian immigrants drafted into the war and the feelings he had when learning about them. The book is a 6 hour listen and it kept me very engaged the entire time. I hope you enjoy it as well.

If you read this book, I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Leave a comment and I’d love to have a discussion.
