What sacrifices have you made in life? This question caused me to pause and think for a moment. When I was a little girl I always thought I’d be a mother and much of my life would be given in sacrifice of time, desires and things to raise children. However, since I have not yet gotten the opportunity to raise children of my own I had to really think about where I have sacrificed in my lifetime.
I have throughout the years been involved in numerous volunteer opportunities in which I have given my time and talents for the betterment of society as a whole.
I have worked with kids and teens with mental health issues centering around depression and suicide. I have volunteered at animal shelters and soup kitchens. I have given my time to lead teenagers in spiritual journeys.
What really is the difference between sacrifice and service? I think we often think of service as a sacrifice, but often service is helping us just as much as it is helping whomever we are serving. When service pushes into the realm of being unhealthy for the person serving then, according to some, it would be considered a sacrifice.
So, finally after all that I can say, I have sacrificed time, especially when I was extremely ill to create a good experience for girls who I was serving at the time in college. I gave much of my time to making sure their experience was as good. Sacrifice comes with its own reward though. When you are able to give up something you want or need to see someone else flourish, sacrifice is made worth it.
